A pop a day keeps boredom away!

About

I got a new toy for Christmas, and decided to have some fun!  My tasters/partners in pop-making are my two daughters, ages 2.5 and 6 (there’s also a baby, but he’s too little to be of help).  Tech support and skepticism provided by my loving husband.

  1. You told me you would live at my blog… well we have decided to clean out the office/spare room so you can move in (as long as you bring your Zoku & ideas with you!)

Great blog! Thank you! Just got a Zoku and wondering what your top 3 easiest and foolproof recipes are (with the fewest ingredients)… I started experimenting with more failures than successes and think I should start with tried, tested, and true recipes first…

    • For easy, nothing beats straight juice — orange works great, as does cranberry juice cocktail. If you want something more interesting, try layering different juices.

For fun, try the basic chocolate ice pop recipe — equal parts milk and half & half, plus a heaping spoonful or two of your favorite chocolate milk mix (I use Ovaltine). This one is great because it lends itself to a variety of mix-ins.

Jello pops are also about as easy as it gets, with the added benefit of being slow-melting.

      Hope this helps!

Thank you so much!!! Can’t wait to try these… I can guess, but, is a Jello pop just jello?

Disregard my question…I just found your recipe online! Thanks again!! I have to watch the sugars so not sure I can do the regular Jell-O and I’m guessing the Sugar Free won’t really work (according to the Zoku Instruction book). Any thoughts?

      • I haven’t tried any artificially sweetened pops yet, both because I’m afraid they’ll stick and because we tend to avoid artificial sweeteners in general. But I will say that the Zoku instructions say not to put unsweetened liquid in the Zoku, but I’ve done it and the pops have come out. They were impossible to eat, but they didn’t stick. If you decide to try it, I’d say be mindful and don’t force the remover tool. If the pops do stick, all it costs you is thawing time so you can clean out the Zoku. And come back here and let me know how it works out!

I just got a Zoku and this is my new favourite blog! I love your ideas 🙂

  5. I just got my Zoku today and I cant wait to try it this weekend (or maybe tomorrow if im too impatient) and I am literally drooling over your pictures!! Im in the UK so most of the ingredients I cant get (booooo) BUT we do have an american shop with lots of nice drinks and such – Have you tried adding candies into pops? like haribo or soft jolly rancher type stuff (im tring to think of american goodies) I have looked at all your recipes from day 51 onwards – going to get day 1 – 51 done tomorrow!!!! YUM!

    • I put crushed malted milk balls in one pop and reese’s in another (I think), but haven’t tried sugar candies. Many are too big to fit into the molds without chopping. But it’s a great idea, and I may try it sometime.

And welcome, by the way! Glad you’re enjoying the blog, and I hope you find some inspiration here!

      • Thank you!! Those ideas sound awesome, I will be trying it out tonight for the first time with some juice, my husband cant wait!! 🙂
        happy popping!!

I had great success the first 4 times I used the Zoku now, using the same recipes, I’m having trouble removing the pops… What’s the most common reason for that?

    • Can you tell me a little more about what you’re making and what the trouble is? Do the pops simply refuse to come out at all, or do the sticks pull out of them? If it’s the latter, your base is too soft or sweet. If it’s the former and you’re using the same recipes you had success with before, I’m a little stumped.

Thanks for your quick reply. The latest was with a coconut recipe (1 oz fresh grated coconut, 1 oz heavy cream, 2 oz milk, 1 tsp agave syrup). Worked fine the other day. The pops refuse to come out — I haven’t had the issue of the sticks pulling out yet…

    • Hmm. Nothing in your recipe should give you trouble — I’m pretty sure the recipes in the Zoku book use agave with no problems. Might be time for a call to customer service.

  8. Hi there,
Just got a zoku and found you through my online search for tips & recipes. If someone ever told me I’d be reading 30 blog entries on ice pops (in one sitting) I’d have told him to lighten up on the vino. But I have! You have a great writing voice and you give excellent detail. Thank you for sharing. Happy to be keeping you company on your 2012 mission. Where do you get your fruit purée?

    • Thanks for your kind words, and welcome! I’m so glad you’re enjoying this blog. I get my fruit purees at Harris Teeter. So far, it’s the only place I have seen them around here.

  9. I’m inspired! I’ve had my zoku for years and haven’t used it as much as I’d like. Filling the base is always a mess-do you use the special filling cup? Thanks!!
